Is crypto legal in Ghana?

Not legal advice. Below are the regulators’ own words, quoted from their official pages on the dates shown. Laws and rules change: check the regulator’s site before you open an account.

Facts verified on October 28, 2026

In Ghana, the Virtual Asset Service Providers Act, 2025 (Act 1154) covers virtual assets and virtual asset service providers (VASPs). According to the Bank of Ghana (BoG), Parliament passed the Act on 19 December 2025, and it assigns regulatory responsibilities to the BoG and the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), depending on the nature of the activity.

The quotes below come from three documents. The first is an SEC press release dated 29 December 2025 on the passage of the bill, which says who will need to be licensed or registered and by which regulator. The second is the BoG’s list of frequently asked questions on the Act, dated February 2026: it says whom the law targets and that the Ghana cedi remains the sole legal tender in Ghana. The third is an SEC public notice dated 19 August 2026 that lists the participants admitted to the SEC’s virtual asset sandbox, which the SEC says commenced in March 2026, and explains what their participation is meant to support: the finalisation of the SEC’s guidelines and regulations on activity-specific licensing and registration.

The quotes are in their original language, English, and carry the dates of the documents they come from. Both regulators are listed below with links to their websites. Before you use a crypto platform, check its status with the BoG or the SEC.
