Is crypto legal in Namibia?

Not legal advice. Below are the regulators’ own words, quoted from their official pages on the dates shown. Laws and rules change: check the regulator’s site before you open an account.

Facts verified on October 28, 2026

In Namibia, the Bank of Namibia (BoN) is the regulating authority for virtual asset service providers (VASPs) under the Virtual Assets Act, 2023 (Act No. 10 of 2023), and publishes the Act on its website.

The quotes below come from an explainer on the Act that the BoN publishes next to it, “All you need to know about the Virtual Assets Act, 2023”. The explainer is undated; its file was created in August 2023. The quotes cover the Act and the date it became operational, the BoN’s statement on the legal tender status of virtual currencies compared with the Namibia Dollar, the BoN’s role in licensing, regulating and supervising virtual asset service providers, and the penalty the explainer gives for operating as a VASP without being properly registered.

The explainer also says that the Financial Intelligence Centre (FIC) keeps its role in anti-money-laundering registration, licensing and supervision of the industry, and that the Bank of Namibia keeps a record of all licensed VASPs.

The quotes are in their original language, English. Before you use a crypto platform, ask the Bank of Namibia whether the provider holds a licence under the Virtual Assets Act, 2023.
