Is crypto legal in Zambia?

Not legal advice. Below are the regulators’ own words, quoted from their official pages on the dates shown. Laws and rules change: check the regulator’s site before you open an account.

Facts verified on October 28, 2026

In Zambia, the Bank of Zambia (BoZ) has asked providers of virtual asset services to register with it. In the same notice it says that it is developing a regulatory framework for virtual asset service providers (VASPs) together with other regulators and stakeholders.

The first three quotes come from that BoZ public notice, dated 16 March 2026. They cover who was asked to register and by when, what the registration does not amount to, and what the BoZ said would apply from 30 March 2026 to the entities it regulates when they deal with VASPs that are not registered with it. The notice also says that the registration applies to resident and non-resident providers that offer virtual asset services to individuals and businesses in Zambia, regardless of their physical presence, and that the BoZ will release a comprehensive regulatory framework in due course.

The fourth quote comes from a notice of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) on cryptocurrencies and related digital products, issued on 13 February 2018 and republished on the SEC’s current website. It explains how the SEC decides whether a digital asset is a security under the Securities Act No. 41 of 2016.

The quotes are in their original language, English. To check whether a provider has registered, contact the Bank of Zambia using the details in its notice.
