Is forex trading legal in India?

Not legal advice. Below are the regulators’ own words, quoted from their official pages on the dates shown. Laws and rules change: check the regulator’s site before you open an account.

Facts verified on October 14, 2026

In India, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) authorises the persons who may deal in forex and the electronic trading platforms (ETPs) on which forex transactions may be carried out, under the Foreign Exchange Management Act, 1999 (FEMA).

The quotes below come from two RBI pages: its FAQ on foreign exchange transactions (updated 28 August 2024) and its Alert List (updated 19 November 2025). They cover with whom residents may undertake forex transactions, forex transactions on platforms that are not authorised, remittances for margin or margin calls to overseas counterparties under the Liberalised Remittance Scheme, and what the Alert List contains.

Before you open an account, look the platform up in the RBI’s list of authorised ETPs (linked under “Regulators and registers”) and on the RBI’s Alert List.
