How the sessions work
Forex trades over the counter, so there is no single opening bell. Activity follows the business hours of the main financial centres. We use these local hours: Sydney 07:00–16:00, Tokyo 09:00–18:00, London 08:00–17:00 and New York 08:00–17:00, each in its own local time. Sources quote slightly different hours; these are the ones we use, not official exchange times.
The retail market week runs from Sunday 17:00 to Friday 17:00 New York time. Your broker’s server times may differ slightly.
Daylight saving time
The UK, the US and Australia change their clocks on different dates (Japan does not change at all), so the gaps between sessions move during the year. For a few weeks in March and about a week at the end of October, for example, the London–New York overlap lasts an hour longer. The calculator converts each centre’s local hours with the official time-zone rules, so it is right on any date.
