Currency conversion cost calculator for investors

See what a broker’s or app’s currency conversion fee costs when you fund an account in another currency, and what a round trip costs.

Pre-filled from the ECB reference rates of October 28, 2026. Replace it with today’s mid-market rate.

You receive
16,397.98 ZAR
Fee
15 USD (249.72 ZAR)
At the mid-market rate
16,647.7 ZAR
Rate after the fee
⁦1 USD = 16.397985 ZAR⁩
Converting there and back costs in total
29.77 USD

Some platforms build their fee into the exchange rate instead of showing it separately; the cost to you is the same.

How it works

Enter the amount, the two currencies, the mid-market rate and the platform’s conversion fee. At the mid-market rate your amount is worth amount × rate; the fee takes its percentage off, so you receive amount × rate × (1 − fee). The calculator also shows the rate you effectively get and what converting the money back would cost with the same fee — the cost you pay when you fund an account in dollars and later withdraw to your local currency.

Example: converting 1,000 US dollars to rand with a 1.5% fee leaves you with 985 dollars’ worth of rand; converting it back with the same fee leaves about 970 dollars, a round-trip cost of about 30.

The rate

The rate is pre-filled from the European Central Bank’s reference rates where the ECB publishes both currencies; for others, enter today’s mid-market rate yourself. Some platforms do not show a separate fee and instead give you a worse exchange rate: compare their rate with the mid-market rate to find the fee.

Limits

Banks and payment providers along the way may charge their own fees, and rates move during the day. Check the platform’s price list for its exact conversion fee.
