MT5 vs cTrader vs TradingView vs Match-Trader: which platform
How the main trading platforms at brokers and prop firms differ in charts, automation, order types and devices, and what to check before you choose an account.

The platform is where you trade, not who you trade with
A broker or prop firm provides the account and the prices; the platform is the software you use to see charts and send orders. The same broker can offer several platforms, and the costs on your account — spreads, commissions, swaps — usually do not depend on the platform you choose. Our platform pages list the brokers and prop firms we review that offer each one.
MetaTrader 5 (MT5)
The most widely offered platform in retail forex and CFDs. It runs on desktop, web and mobile, supports many order types and has a large ecosystem of indicators and expert advisors written in its own language, MQL5. Its older sibling MetaTrader 4 is still offered by many brokers.
cTrader
A platform known for a clean interface, depth-of-market views and automated trading in C#. It is offered by fewer brokers than MetaTrader, often on raw-spread accounts.
TradingView
A charting platform used by many traders for analysis. Some brokers and prop firms let you connect your account and trade from TradingView charts. The charting tools are its strength; check which order types and account features are available through the connection.
Match-Trader and in-house platforms
Many prop firms use Match-Trader, DXtrade, TradeLocker or their own web platforms. These are usually web and mobile first. Futures prop firms use futures platforms such as NinjaTrader, Tradovate or Rithmic-based software.
What to check before you choose
- Your strategy. If you use expert advisors or bots, pick the platform they are written for.
- Order types. Stop-loss, take-profit, trailing stops and partial closes work differently across platforms.
- Lot sizes and symbols. Contract sizes and symbol names can differ between platforms at the same broker; check the value of one lot with the pip value calculator.
- Devices. Make sure the mobile app supports the features you need.
- Rules at prop firms. Some platforms are available only for certain programs.
