Islamic swap-free accounts: how they work and what to check

What a swap-free (Islamic) trading account changes, how brokers replace overnight swaps with other charges, and the conditions to read before you open one.

What a swap is

When you keep a leveraged forex or CFD position open past the daily rollover, the broker credits or charges a swap — overnight financing based mainly on the interest-rate difference between the two currencies or on the financing cost of the instrument. Many Muslim traders avoid accounts that pay or charge interest, so brokers offer swap-free accounts, often called Islamic accounts.

What a swap-free account changes

On a swap-free account no swap is credited or charged for positions held overnight. Brokers cover their costs in other ways, and these differ widely:

  • a fixed administration fee per lot per night, sometimes only after a number of free nights;
  • wider spreads or higher commissions on the account;
  • limits on how long a position may stay open, or on which instruments are swap-free.

Some brokers make every account swap-free; others offer it on request, sometimes only to residents of certain countries or after a written declaration.

What to check before you open one

  1. Which instruments are swap-free — exotic pairs, metals, indices and crypto are often excluded.
  2. Whether an administration fee applies, from which night and how much it is.
  3. Whether the spread or commission is higher than on the standard account.
  4. Whether the broker can remove the swap-free status if positions stay open for long periods.
  5. Whether deposits, withdrawals and leverage are the same as on the standard account.

Prop firms

On a prop firm challenge you usually trade a simulated account, and the treatment of overnight fees varies by firm and by program. If swaps matter to you, check the firm’s rules before you buy.

A note on religious rulings

A swap-free account removes interest payments, but whether a particular product suits your beliefs is a question for a qualified scholar, not for a broker or for us.
