Overview
Bolero is the online investment platform of the Belgian KBC group. Its site says Bolero is a division of KBC Bank SA, whose registered office is at 2 Avenue du Port in Brussels. KBC Securities launched Bolero in 1999, and in July 2018 it joined the legal entity of KBC’s Belgian banking and insurance division. Bolero describes itself as an “execution only” service: it passes your orders to the market and gives no personalised advice. All facts in this review were checked on the French version of the site on 28 October 2026.
Who supervises it
A Bolero FAQ calls the FSMA (Financial Services and Markets Authority) “the regulator of Belgian banks” and says Bolero reports certain transactions to it every day; a disclaimer on the site says KBC Bank SA is supervised by the FSMA. The pages we read do not publish a licence number for KBC Bank, and we did not find its entry in a regulator’s register.
Who can open an account
You can open a Bolero account if you are an adult domiciled in Belgium, and you must hold a Belgian current account that becomes your counterparty account for transfers out of Bolero. You do not need to be a KBC or CBC client. US residents and citizens cannot open an account; people born in the United States who have renounced US nationality can, with a certificate of loss of nationality and a W-8BEN form. The site’s legal notice adds that its information is intended for Belgian residents only.
Products and markets
Bolero offers all listed products: shares, certificates, bonds, options, trackers (ETFs), warrants, turbos, speeders and sprinters, as well as unlisted (OTC) funds and crypto. Fractional shares are not mentioned for stocks.
Online, you can trade on more than 20 markets. The list includes Euronext Brussels, Amsterdam, Paris and Dublin, Lisbon, Frankfurt (Xetra), the United States (the FAQ on US real-time prices names NYSE and NASDAQ), Toronto, Budapest, Milan, Copenhagen, Oslo, Stockholm, Helsinki and Zurich. Orders for Luxembourg, Greece, Hong Kong, Japan and Australia go by phone through the Orderdesk, which is open from 8:00 to 22:00 on trading days.
Costs
Opening a Bolero account is free. There is no entry threshold, no minimum starting amount, no required number of trades and no custody fee.
We could not confirm what a US share order costs. Bolero publishes its brokerage grid as an image on its tariffs page and as a PDF price list, both stored in a folder that the site’s robots.txt closes to automated readers, so we did not read them. The FAQ only says that special rates apply to orders up to EUR 2,500 and that brokerage starts at EUR 2.50 for orders up to EUR 250 in the ETFs of its “Playlist ETF”.
When you buy a security in another currency without enough cash in that currency, Bolero converts your money and charges a currency margin; the rate is on the same grid we could not read. You can open accounts in foreign currencies (US dollars, pounds, Canadian dollars, Swiss francs and others) to avoid converting every time. In Bolero’s cost preview, a dollar share settled in euros counts the margin twice, on the purchase and on the sale.
Belgian stock-exchange tax is added to share trades: 0.35% of the amount on purchases and sales, with a maximum of EUR 1,600; bonds (except OLOs) are taxed at 0.12% and capitalising funds at 1.32%. Belgian and foreign stock-exchange taxes appear separately on the contract note. Before each order, Bolero shows an estimate of the costs and taxes.
Protection
Bolero holds client cash on a separate account with another financial institution. The Belgian Fonds de garantie des services financiers (financial services guarantee fund) covers deposits up to EUR 100,000 per person, once across all accounts at KBC Bank and Bolero. If KBC Bank - Bolero could not return your securities, the fund covers up to EUR 20,000 per client. You remain the owner of your securities. Crypto is not covered by the deposit guarantee.
Deposits and withdrawals
You fund the account by bank transfer, either from your usual banking app or to KBC Bank NV’s account with your personal structured reference. Transfers in foreign currencies such as dollars are accepted, but transfers from foreign bank accounts are not: move the money to your Belgian counterparty account first. Withdrawals go to that counterparty account.
Euro transfers are instant between KBC/CBC and Bolero and with other banks that offer instant transfers; otherwise they can take up to three working days. Outgoing transfers are limited to EUR 62,000 per transaction on the web platform and EUR 25,000 in the app, but you can make several in a row. The site does not state a transfer fee.
What we could not confirm
- The commission for a US share or ETF order, and the currency-conversion margin: both are only in the price grid we could not read.
- Whether there is an inactivity fee: none is mentioned on the pages we read.
- KBC Bank’s licence number and its entry in the regulator’s register.
- Fractional shares and Islamic accounts: not mentioned on the pages we read.
We have not tested this platform with our own account yet; this review will be updated when we do.
